Fixed braces are the most common type of braces and are effective for treating a wide range of orthodontic issues

There are two options of fixed braces:

  • Metal braces consist of metal brackets and wires that are attached to your teeth. They are the most common type of braces and are effective for treating a wide range of orthodontic issues.
  • Ceramic braces consist of tooth coloured material to blend in with the natural colour of teeth. Clear braces are like traditional braces, but the brackets are made from a clear or tooth-coloured material, making them less noticeable and more aesthetically appealing

Your options

If you are unhappy about the positioning of your teeth and the appearance of your smile, Dr Vas will take the time to fully assess your mouth and teeth. He will discuss the most suitable orthodontic options and answer any questions you may have. He will then work with you to help build a personalised care plan to help you achieve the smile you have always hoped for, with increased comfort and an improved ability to maintain excellent oral health.

The importance of excellent oral hygiene with fixed braces

If you decide to go ahead with fixed braces for your own teeth or your child, Dr Vas will help you to understand the importance of excellent oral hygiene while the braces are in place. Plaque can easily build up on the teeth around the brackets if they are not carefully cleaned after every meal. As plaque can be a breeding ground for bacteria which attacks the teeth, extra vigilance is extremely important, as it will help to reduce the chances of damage or staining.

What are fixed braces?
Fixed braces, also known as traditional braces, or train tracks are orthodontic appliances used to straighten teeth and correct misalignment issues. They consist of metal or ceramic brackets that are bonded to the front surface of the teeth and connected by wires and elastic bands.
Can I still eat normally with fixed braces?
It is important to avoid certain foods that may damage the brackets, such as hard or sticky foods. Avoid biting into hard objects, Dr Vas will give you information on the dos and don’ts of braces.
Will I need to wear a retainer after my fixed braces are removed?
Yes, wearing a retainer is typically necessary after fixed braces are removed to maintain the results of orthodontic treatment and prevent the teeth from moving back to their original positions. Dr Vas will provide specific instructions on how long and when to wear your retainer based on your treatment plan.
