If a tooth is infected or irreversibly inflamed, root canal treatment is the only treatment that can save a tooth that might otherwise have to be removed. Root canal treatment removes the infection and inflammation inside an affected tooth.

Many patients worry that root canal treatment is a very painful, lengthy procedure, which is no longer the case with recent advances in dentistry. For those who are particularly anxious or worried, we are able to offer sedation to help ease your fears.

Reasons why root canal treatment may be necessary

Decay has reached the pulp tissue inside the tooth
An abscess has developed, causing pain and/or swelling
The pulp tissue is irreversibly inflamed, sometimes due to a very deep filling being placed
Trauma to the tooth. Injuries can cause the pulp tissue to become irreversibly inflamed, although this process may take years

If you need a tooth re-root filled (root canal treatment on a tooth that has already had one)
If you have complex root anatomy

Can I have sedation for my treatment?

Of course, your sedation options can be discussed with Dr Neil during your consultation. Find out more.

Will a root canal hurt?

Root canal treatment is typically performed under local anaesthesia, which will numb the tooth and surrounding area so you should not feel pain during the procedure. It is normal to experience some mild discomfort or sensitivity in the days following a root canal procedure. However, if you experience any concerning symptoms, please contact the clinic.
