Periodontal (Gum) Health

The importance of gum health

Gum health is vitally important because healthy gums provide the foundation for strong teeth. When gums are unhealthy, they can become inflamed, infected, and even start to recede, which can lead to tooth loss. Additionally, gum disease has been linked to a number of other health problems, such as heart disease and diabetes. Therefore, taking care of your gums is crucial for maintaining overall health.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is caused by a buildup of plaque on the teeth. If plaque is not regularly removed by brushing, the gums can become irritated and inflamed. Plaque which is not removed eventually hardens into a substance called calculus which has to be removed by your dentist or hygienist.

Who can get gum disease?

Most people can get mild gum disease, but some people are susceptible to more aggressive forms. Severe gum disease, especially if you have it at a young age, can run in families. There are a few factors that put people at higher risk of getting severe gum disease, some of which include: Poor oral hygiene Diabetes (especially if poorly controlled) Smoking Stress Poor diet lacking in vitamins and minerals Obesity Certain medications.

You can discuss your oral hygiene and gum health with your dentist or hygienist at your appointment.

The stages of Periodontitis (inflammation of the gums)

  1. Gingivitis
The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. This is caused by bacteria that collects at the gum line as dental plaque, causing inflammation of the gums. This is preventable with good oral care and can be easily treated if found early enough.
  2. Periodontitis
If gingivitis is left untreated, it can develop into a more advanced stage of periodontal disease called Periodontitis. This is when the gum starts to come away from the tooth, forming pockets, and the plaque grows down below the gum line.
  3. Advanced periodontitis
The final stage of periodontal disease is when the bone that supports the teeth is destroyed, the gums shrink and eventually, the teeth become loose and eventually fall out.

How to prevent gum disease

At Home

  • Brushing your teeth thoroughly twice a day helps to remove a build up of plaque and bacteria, which can cause tooth decay and gum disease. It’s important to maintain regular daily oral hygiene to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy, preventing potential dental problems in the future.
  • Floss and interdental tools should be used to clean between teeth to remove plaque and food debris that a toothbrush can’t reach. Floss is a thin thread that is passed between teeth, while interdental tools are small brushes or picks that can fit between teeth and around dental work. Both are important for maintaining good oral hygiene and preventing gum disease.
