Dental Hygienist vs. Dental Therapist
When it comes to dental care, both dental hygienists and dental therapists play crucial roles in maintaining oral health. While their responsibilities may overlap, there are key differences between the two professions.
Both roles are essential for promoting oral health and ensuring patients receive the best possible care. If you’re unsure which professional to see, your dentist can guide you based on your specific needs.
What is a Dental Hygienist?
A dental hygienist focuses on preventive care and oral health education. Their primary role is to help patients maintain healthy teeth and gums by providing professional cleanings, scaling, and polishing. They also offer guidance on proper brushing, flossing, and diet to prevent gum disease and cavities.
What is a Dental Therapist?
A dental therapist has a broader scope of practice that includes both preventive and restorative care. In addition to performing the duties of a dental hygienist, they are trained to carry out certain dental procedures, such as fillings, extracting baby teeth, and placing fissure sealants.

Why should I visit the hygienist?
Visiting the hygienist regularly is important for maintaining optimal oral health. Even with if you brush your teeth regularly it is still easy to miss areas that need cleaning, especially if you have overcrowding, or struggle to reach all of your tooth surfaces. Hygienist sessions can help to clean thoroughly in these areas that are easily missed, without this it can lead to a higher risk of cavities, gum recession, and food trapping.
What does a hygienist do?
Dental hygienists specialise in preventative dental care. They perform in depth teeth cleanings, remove plaque and tartar and can provide education or oral hygiene techniques.
Will it hurt?
Usually, hygiene treatment is pain free, however if you do experience any discomfort local anaesthetic can be used.
How often should I see the hygienist?
This depends on your individual or oral health needs. Most people are recommended to have six monthly regular check ups and hygienist appointments. Some people may need to see the hygienist more frequently for specific oral conditions, they will be advised to do this by the dentist or hygienist.
