Implant Retained Denture

Implant overdentures

Losing several teeth can have a big impact on a patient’s life. It can affect speech, the ability to eat, and the confidence to smile.

The traditional dental solution is a denture or bridge, which can both function well and look good. However, the lack of roots where the teeth are missing means that the jaw bone gradually shrinks, affecting the fit of the denture and the shape of the face, which can have a considerable ageing effect.

Implant-retained dentures can be an effective solution in many ways. They halt the process of bone loss and support the other healthy teeth in the mouth. Many patients also find their dentures fit and function better, boosting confidence and allowing them to enjoy all the foods they love once more. Unlike traditional dentures, which rely solely on suction or adhesives for stability, implant-retained dentures are anchored in place by dental implants surgically placed into the jawbone.

Implant retained denture to replace multiple missing teeth

An implant-retained denture involves the placement of 4 or more implants. The implants provide stability and stimulate the surrounding bone to prevent significant bone loss. A denture is then fabricated which can clip onto the implants to secure the denture in place. Allowing for it to be removed for cleaning.

What is the dental implant treatment process?

If you decide to go ahead with a dental implant, your expert implant surgeon will begin by administering a local anaesthetic, to ensure the process is pain free for you, however we also offer a sedation option if you prefer. A small, safe titanium post is then placed into the jaw at the site of the missing tooth. This will act as a secure ‘root’ for the new tooth, once the implanted post is absorbed by the bone. The area is then stitched up so the jaw bone is able to fully bind to the implant and hold it firm.

In a later appointment, your implant surgeon will take detailed impressions of your teeth and gums, including matching the colour of the surrounding teeth. The results are then sent to a dental laboratory so they can make your new tooth fit and match your mouth. Once the tooth is made you will again be given pain relief so the implant procedure can be completed – your new tooth is securely attached to the healed titanium ‘root’.

We will continue to monitor the dental implant to ensure you do not experience any additional problems, however with their extensive experience, your implant surgeon has an excellent success record and a considerable number of happy implant patients. Your new dental implant will mean you can now enjoy eating, drinking and smiling with complete confidence once more.

Have I got enough bone for dental implants?
If you have been told that there is not enough bone in your jaw to support dental implants, this is normally because there is resorption of the maxilla, upper jaw and this is where the traditional dental implants are placed.
There is a type of implant called a Zygomatic implant that is placed in the cheek bone rather than the jawbone, and this type of dental implant can be used for full mouth restoration. The Zygomatic dental implant process has a high success rate, and it is considered a very safe procedure.
What aftercare is required?

Your implant surgeon will explain the aftercare required during your appointment, they will also give you some information outlining the aftercare process. This information can be found here.

How long do dental implants last?

With proper care and maintenance, dental implants can last a lifetime. They are designed to be a gold standard, permanent solution for tooth replacement, providing long-term stability, function and aesthetics. Regular dental check ups and good oral hygiene practices are essential for ensuring the longevity of dental implants.

Can I have sedation for my treatment?
