What is Periodontics?

Periodontics is a dental treatment to do with the supporting structures of the tooth (periodontium), such as the gums and bone. This is when the supporting structures of the tooth become inflamed and destroyed. This is an inflammatory response of the gums to bacteria left in the mouth.

What is Periodontitis?

Periodontitis is an advanced stage of gum disease. While it is not possible to grow bone back, periodontitis can be stabilised to stop any further loss of bone.

If your gums are not responding to the treatment given by your hygienist or dentist, or if they feel a referral is beneficial, a periodontist can take a look and give you the options available to you.
