What is sedation?
Sedation is offered for many reasons…
- You may be too anxious or scared to have treatment
- You may be worried about gagging during treatment
- You may have a longer procedure booked and it may be a more comfortable and relaxed experience under sedation
How does sedation work?
Intravenous sedation is the most commonly used form in adults Most patients remember little or nothing of the procedure or of the dental treatment
Intravenous sedation
This involves a carefully controlled amount of sedative (Midazolam) being delivered to your bloodstream to keep you relaxed for as long as the treatment takes. This is the preferred option as we can measure the dose to your response. We will constantly monitor you to ensure you are comfortable throughout the procedure.
Oral sedation
With oral sedation, a sedative is placed in a drink. Intravenous sedation may be required afterwards to ensure you are fully sedated throughout the treatment
Inhalation sedation
This is also known as ‘laughing gas’. Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative that is inhaled through a mask. It helps you feel more relaxed and less anxious during the dental procedure.
Your sedation options
It is important to discuss your options with your dentist, or oral surgeon, to determine which sedation option is best for you based on your individual needs and medical history. You will not be able to drive after most types of sedation, so you may need a responsible adult to escort you to your appointment and home after. You will not be able to drive, work, or look after small children for 24 hours after sedation.

Can I have sedation for all dental procedures?
Can anyone have sedation?
Children over 4 –16 years old can have sedation with a specialist paediatric dentist, young adults and adults can have sedation with a general dentist.
Your general health will need to be assessed to ensure that you are suitable, taking in to account your medical history and any pre-existing health conditions.
Here are some factors related to health and sedation to consider:
- Medical history
- Physical fitness
- Allergies and sensitivities
- Medications and supplements
- Pregnancy
How much does it cost?
The fee for sedation will be dependent on which option is suitable for you and the length of the treatment. Your clinician will give you an estimate of cost at your dental assessment.
Will I be able to have all my treatment completed under one sedation session?
There will be treatments that can be done in one session; your dentist will always plan to do as much as possible. Your clinician will plan the treatment schedule with you to optimise the sedation session with you.
